How Often Should You Walk Your Dog?
No matter how busy our lives get, it's important we make time every day to walk our dogs. Walking is good not only for a dog's physical health, but their mental health too, especially if they're home alone most of the day. But how often should a pup get walkies, and for how long? Find out here.
Walking puppies
If you've ever had a puppy before, you know with every burst of energy that sends them zooming around the house comes the need for a power nap. They may be fluffy balls of excitement and joy as soon as they're out the door, but walk too long, and you'll be carrying them back home.
To avoid this, it's recommended that puppies walk for about five minutes per month of age. So if your pup is six months old, 30 minutes is about the max they'll be able to manage. Of course, every dog is different, as is every breed, so don't push them to the limit if they get tired early, or stay out a little longer if they return home with as much energy as they left with.
Walking adult dogs
At around one year old for small dogs, and 18 months for larger breeds, your puppy becomes an adult dog, and their walking needs will change.
On average, a relaxed, low-energy dog will need a walk lasting between 15 and 30 minutes, while more excitable, high-energy dogs, or fur babies with not much room at home, may need two 30-minute walks spread out over the day to give them the exercise they need. As we mentioned with puppies, every dog will be different, so adjust the schedule to make sure it's the perfect fit for them.
Walking older dogs
In their more mature years, dogs will need less exercise, and more time to recover from it. Even if your pup doesn't have health issues, it can be worth it to keep walks on flat, familiar terrain close to home or wherever you park your car if off on an adventure. They won't be as easy to carry back as they were as puppies!
No time to walk your dog?
We get it. As important as it is, sometimes it's difficult to find the chance to take your dog on a walk every day. On days like that, it's still important to make sure your pup is entertained and engaged. Take a look at our blog featuring four fun indoor activities to entertain your dog as a guide to what you can do around the house, or come up with your own.
Don't think you have to make up for lost walkies the next day though. You'll only wear them out.
How can I keep my dog safe on walks?
The first step is picking the right accessories for your dog. You can follow our harness guide here to help you decide whether a reversible or adjustable harness is pawfect for your pup, then follow our size guides to make sure your dog will stay secure.
The next step is to decide where you want to go! Check social media, local guide pages or ask your neighbours about safe and fun locations you and your dog can go on your next adventure. Or keep it close to home; there'll always be new sights and smells for your dog to enjoy, no matter where you are.
General dog walking tips
- Keep your dog out of wet or muddy areas, especially in winter, and make sure to groom them, or walks can become uncomfortable and even painful.
- Bring water for your dog if travelling away from home, and not just in summer! It's important to keep hydrated no matter what.
- Keep the capabilities of your pup's breed in mind at all times. Thick-coated dogs will get tired quicker in the heat. Pugs, bulldogs, and other breeds with short snouts can't cool themselves as easily either. Some small dogs may seem like they have unlimited energy, but their short legs means they don't need much exercise, so don't walk a chihuahua like it's a border collie.
- Don't forget your waste bag holder! If your dog does a doody, you have to do your duty and clean up after them.
- If we've missed anything here, don't hesitate to ask your vet for advice.
