Summer Time Treatos - 3 Cooling Treats for Dogs

3 Summer Treats for Dogs to Beat the Aussie Heat

As the summer sun blazes in Australia, our furry friends need extra help to stay cool and comfortable. What better way to keep your pup happy than with some refreshing and healthy treats? Here are three easy-to-make summertime recipes that I make for my dogs Yogi and Lilo during the crazy Aussie Summer!

One thing to remember before giving your pup a frozen treat, is to ensure you supervise them while they enjoy it as of course frozen treats can be a choking hazard so supervision is a must.

1. Frozen Peanut Butter & Banana Pops

Ingredients:

  • 2 ripe bananas

  • 1/3 cup of unsalted, xylitol-free peanut butter

  • 1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt

  • Silicone molds or an ice cube tray

Instructions:

  1. Peel and mash the bananas in a mixing bowl.

  2. Add the peanut butter and Greek yogurt, then mix until well combined.

  3. Spoon the mixture into silicone molds or an ice cube tray.

  4. Freeze for 3-4 hours or until solid.

  5. Serve as a cooling snack for your pup!

Tip: These are great for teething puppies too!

2. Watermelon Pup Slushie

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups seedless watermelon (cubed)

  • 1/4 cup coconut water (unsweetened and additive-free)

Instructions:

  1. Blend the watermelon cubes until smooth.

  2. Add the coconut water and blend for a few more seconds.

  3. Pour the mixture into a bowl and serve immediately for a refreshing slushie.

Tip: Freeze the slushie in small portions to serve later as a frozen treat.

Too much coconut can upset your pup's stomach, so limit this treat to a few times a week to ensure a happy dog.

3. Chicken Broth & Veggie Ice Blocks

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup low-sodium chicken broth (check it’s onion- and garlic-free)

  • 1/2 cup diced carrots

  • 1/2 cup green beans (chopped)

  • Ice cube tray

Instructions:

  1. Place a few pieces of carrots and green beans into each compartment of the ice cube tray.

  2. Pour the chicken broth over the veggies, filling each compartment.

  3. Freeze for 4-6 hours or until solid.

  4. Pop out an ice block and give it to your dog for a nutritious cool-down treat.

Tip: You can substitute chicken broth with beef or vegetable broth for variety.
